Yes, this is among the most mainstream beers I've ever reviewed and among the most mainstream beers I consume on a semi-regular basis (with Guinness and Newcastle being the others). But given its ubiquity in Mexican restaurants, and its frequent status as the only "non-yellow" beer in those restaurants, it's worth knowing what you're getting into.
Characteristics: Reddish-brown color, medium-high carbonation, thin body, with biscuity malt flavors throughout, a slight hoppiness in the carbonation, and some sweet notes in the finish.
Minor Gripes: The flavors are slightly out-of-balance at times, and a slightly heavier body would help settle the chili peppers that so often accompany this beer.
Bottom Line: It's nice to have something like Negra Modelo available in the rotation when confronted with an ocean of yellow blandness. Just skip the lime wedge, please?
